1983: Humble Beginnings at the Flea Market What is now Snyder's Furniture originally began as Grandma's Quilts & Pillows. Founded by our grandmother, Minnie Snyder, the business started with a single booth at the Smoketown Flea Market, offering beautiful, Amish-made quilts and soft pillows to the local community.
The Early Years: Expanding the Vision Demand quickly grew. Over the next few years, the family opened small booths at various local farmers' markets, showcasing the incredible craftsmanship of Lancaster County. Minnie and her daughter, Eileen, also opened a basement fabric store and ran a seasonal Christmas decoration shop at the East Town Mall.
A True Family Affair: Woodworking Enters the Picture Recognizing the potential of the growing business, Minnie’s husband, John, left his full-time job to help manage the bustling enterprise. Around this time, the product lineup expanded to include larger craft items and small, unfinished solid wood furniture that customers could finish themselves.
The 1990s: The Barn Woodshop & The Shift to Fine Furniture With John, Minnie, and two of their four children all working together, the family built a dedicated woodshop inside John and Minnie’s barn. This marked a pivotal shift: Snyder's began focusing entirely on handcrafting high-quality furniture for locals and tourists alike. By building our own pieces and partnering with talented woodworkers in the surrounding Amish and Mennonite communities, Snyder's curated a truly unique, localized collection.
1999: Our Lancaster County Showroom Having outgrown the family barn, Snyder's built the expansive permanent showroom just outside Intercourse, PA—the very same building we call home today.
Today: A Third-Generation Legacy of Customization Decades later, the grandsons are proud to carry on Minnie and John's original dedication to Lancaster County craftsmanship, managing the family enterprise from the retail floor to our e-commerce operations. While styles and technologies evolve, our core philosophy remains unchanged: furniture is where your life happens.
